Mrs. Franklin

Mrs. Franklin was a "walkist". In the nineteenth century many people cultivated walkism or the art of walking; there were competitions and championships to see who could walk the farthest. Franklin's short dress attests to a woman's need to keep her legs free while striding. She poses on an elaborate "outdoor" set at the Sarony studio in New York, having removed her hat.
