Myra Clark Gaines (1805-1885)
Myra Clark Gaines was the heiress to thirty-five million dollars in real estate which was held by the city of New Orleans and which she had to fight for through the legal system. Her father, Daniel Clark, had passed for a bachelor, but it was afterward claimed that he married a young Frenchwoman and left a will acknowledging the legitimacy of Myra and bequeathing to her his property. Myra Clark was the wife of General Edmund Pendleton Gaines. The caption on the carte de visite reads "Mrs. Gen'l Gaines."
