Marietta Gazzaniga (1824-1884)

Marietta Gazzaniga was an Italian soprano. She made her 1840 debut at Voghera (near Milan) as Jane Seymour in "Anna Bolena" and Romeo in "I Capuleti e i Montecchi." Gazzaniga created the title role in "Luisa Miller" (which Verdi wrote expressly for her) in Naples in 1849 and also that of Lina in "Stiffelio" in Trieste in 1850. Performing both lyric coloratura and heroic parts, the singer toured North and Central America several times. In 1857 the soprano made her U.S. debut at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia as Leonora in "Il Trovatore." Singing the role of Violetta in "La Traviata" Gazzaniga made her New York debut that same year at the Academy of Music. Her voice was silvery and reached a broad range, but lacked agility.
