Emma Howson (1844-1928)
Emma Howson was an Australian soprano in opera and comic opera. The American actor Joseph Jefferson discovered her in Australia and urged her to come to the U.S., where she made her debut as Amina in the English "La Sonnambula." Howson made her first New York appearance in "Maritana" at the Grand Opera House in 1869. In 1873 she went to Italy to study its language and opera. Howson debuted in Malta again as Amina in "La Sonnambula" in 1875. Creating the role of Josephine in "H.M.S. Pinafore," she made her first appearance in London in 1878 for D'Oyly Carte. In the 1880s Howson returned to the U.S.
