Carlotta Grisi (1819-1899)

Carlotta Grisi was a famous prima ballerina and vocalist from Italy. She began touring at age fourteen. In 1834 Grisi met the dancer and choreographer Jules Perrot, who became her mentor and took her to Paris. The dancer made her Paris debut at the Theatre de la Renaissance in 1840, singing and dancing in "Le Zingaro." Her operatic debut was in Donizetti's "La Favorita," which Perrot choreographed, at the Paris Opera in 1841. The ballet "Giselle" was created expressly for Grisi and premiered in Paris in 1841. Perrot choreographed all of her solo numbers. The reviews were ecstatic and established Grisi as a star. Lucien Petipa became her dancing partner. Her last appearance in Paris was in 1849 in "La Filleule des Fees," for which the choreography was considered Perrot's finest work. Grisi had two daughters, the first by Perrot and the second by Prince Leon Radziwill. This painting portrays Grisi as Giselle in 1841.
