Celine Montaland (1843-1891)
Celine Montaland, a French actress, made her debut at age twelve at the Palais Royal in Paris. But she soon left the theater world for a Russian prince and became scandalous. Attempting to make a comeback, Montaland performed opera-bouffe at the Grand Opera House of New York, but with little success. Montaland returned to Paris where she undertook the serious study of drama. She was soon engaged by the prestigious Comedie Francaise and became one of the leading actresses of France. Here Montaland poses in a voluminous ruffled dress and hat.
