Carrie A. Moore (b.1843)
Carrie Augusta Moore, who first appeared in 1865, was such a talented figure skater that she became known as "Queen of the Ice." She joined forces with skater Charles Moore in the 1870s and the pair starred in skits such as "The Troubles of an Amateur Skater" (Miner's Theatre, 1882). Moore also gave velocipede (bicycle) demonstrations across the country, notably in San Francisco in 1871. Here the young athlete poses on a velocipede in front of a bucolic set at the Gurney studio in New York City, circa 1871.
