Horatio G. Wright (1820-99)

Horatio Gouverneur Wright was a brevet major general in the Union Army. Second in his class at West Point (1841), he subsequently taught French and engineering there. When Virginia seceded Wright led the expedition to destroy the Norfolk Navy Yard. At 1st Bull Run he was Heintzelman's chief engineering officer and was promoted to brigadier general during the Port Royal expedition. Although Wright was an able division leader he did not rise to the occasion as an army leader: in command of Sheridan's army at Cedar Creek, Wright was unable to stabilize the situation until Sheridan returned. He was brevetted major general in the regular army for his role at Petersburg. This carte de visite is an engraved portrait of Wright.
