Mary Toppan, Mrs. Benjamin Pickman (1744-1817?)

Mary Toppan was the daughter of Dr. Bezaleel Toppan and Mary Barton. She married Benjamin Pickman in 1762. In this 1763 portrait of Mrs. Pickman her dress is blue, the umbrella blue-green, blue and white flowers are in her hair, and a white bow is tied at the nape of her neck. It was painted by John Singleton Copley (1738-1815). Copley was the foremost colonial portrait painter in the United States. A realist, he paid great attention to actual detail rather than symbols or dramatic effect.
