Madame C. Rentz

Madame Rentz headed "Mme. Rentz and Her All Female Minstrels," which toured burlesque circuits in the 1870s. Rentz was a bold impresario, for female minstrels were still rare during that period. Her manager was M. B. (Michael Bennett) Leavitt who was a well known variety and minstrel show manager. They succeeded less well in the 1880s, as revealed by a review of a Wilmington, NC, engagement in the "New York Dramatic Mirror:" "Rentz Santley Burlesque Co... the performers were below the level of variety and if Mr. Leavitt expects his show to be patronized here he will have to send in better material" (March-April 1884). Rentz poses here at the E. P. Dunshee studio in Boston.
