Betty Rigl (b.1845)
Betty Rigl was a dancer from Holland. She began her career in music halls in England, and then came to the U.S. to perform in the original "Black Crook," at Niblo's Garden in 1866. Rigl was the sister of Emily Rigl, also a dancer. Here she poses in a risqué costume from "The Black Crook," at the James Warner studio in New York. Ironically, the photographer placed an open book in front of her, to suggest she was reading.
