Adelaide Ristori (1822-1906)
Adelaide Ristori was an Italian actress. The daughter of strolling players she began acting at age four. At fourteen she had her first success as Francesca da Rimini. The actress married Marquis Capranica Del Grillo in 1846. In 1866 she made the first of four visits to the U.S., where she was especially well received in Giacometti's "Elizabeth." Ristori retired in 1885. Her favorite roles were Mary Stuart, Elizabeth I, Phaedra and Lady Macbeth. Here she poses in a nun costume, perhaps for Shakespeare's "Measure for Measure," at the Sarony studio in New York.
