Mrs. Napoleon Sarony
Louie Sarony was the second wife of the famous photographer, Napoleon Sarony (1821-1896). His first wife died in 1858. As eccentric as her husband, who wore outlandish outfits, Louie Sarony rented elaborate costumes and wore them every afternoon as she took her walk around Washington Square. Each costume was worn once, and then returned to its shop. Here the young woman poses in a dramatically striped, tent-like creation, in 1866.
