Kate Bateman (1843-1917)
Actress Kate Bateman made her New York debut at age six as the oldest and most successful of the famous Bateman Children. Marketed by their father, manager Hezekiah Bateman, as well as by P. T. Barnum, the children toured Europe and the U.S. Their mother, Frances Bateman, was an actress and playwright. Although Kate retired from the stage in 1856, she returned in 1860 to play Evangeline in her mother's play of the same name. When Hezekiah Bateman died in 1875, Frances Bateman took over the management of London's Lyceum Theatre and opened the 1875 season with "Macbeth," in which Kate played Lady Macbeth. Here she poses between her sisters, Isabel and Virginia, at the Elliott and Fry studio in London.
