Caroline Richings, Mrs. Peter Bernard (1827-1882)
Caroline Richings was an opera singer, pianist, librettist, composer, director, and impresario. Born in England as Mary Caroline Reynoldson, she was adopted by U.S. actor Peter Richings. The little girl began her career as a concert pianist, but made her operatic debut in 1852 at the Walnut Street Theatre as Marie in "La Fille du Regiment." Richings married Peter Bernard, a tenor in her company, in 1859. Her father formed the Richings Opera Company; the daughter performed as pianist and singer and took over as director when her father retired in 1867.
