Agnes Booth (1843-1910)
Born in Australia, Marian Agnes Land Rookes immigrated to the U.S. in 1858. She first gained a reputation as Hermione in "The Winter's Tale" at Maguire's Opera House in San Francisco (1860). She married the famous actor Junius Brutus Booth Jr., then manager of the Boston Theatre, in 1867. In the 1870s Booth's performance in Shakespeare's "Antony and Cleopatra" brought her fame. In the 1870s she was the leading lady at the Park Theatre and in the 80s at the Madison Square Theatre. The actress could rivet the attention of an audience during several minutes of silence, simply by the play of her eloquent facial features.
