Agnes Robertson, Mrs. Dion Boucicault (1833-1916)
Born in Scotland, Agnes Kelly Robertson was the adopted daughter of Charles Kean. The child began acting at age thirteen. Robertson first appeared in London in 1851 as Nerissa in "Merchant of Venice" at the Princess's Theatre. Seduced by the famous playwright and actor Dion Boucicault, she eloped with him and they fled to the U.S. Robertson's popularity in America, where she was billed as The Pocket Venus, was the foundation of their success there, and Boucicault fashioned plays that featured her. Robertson and her husband had three children who chose a stage career. The first of their six children, Dion, was born on 10 May 1855; Agnes was acting again within a month. They divorced in 1889.
