Senator Joseph McCarthy

Senator Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin had positioned himself as the leading anti-Communist in America. In this photograph, he offers to give reporters a list of twenty-six State Department employees he says are under suspicion of being Communists—but only if the press will grant him immunity from libel (they refused).
