Arabella Goddard (1836-1922)

Arabella Goddard, an English pianist and child prodigy, played for Queen Victoria and the French royal family. Her London debut was in 1850 at Her Majesty's Theatre. J. W. Davison, a music critic and teacher, pushed her toward classical music, particularly Beethoven. Goddard and Davison married in 1860. From 1873 to 1876 she toured the U.S., Australia, and India. In the second half of the nineteenth century Goddard was considered England's leading pianist. In this hand-colored carte de visite, Goddard poses at the Warren studio.
