Ada Harland (b.1847)
Born in England, the daughter of a surgeon, actress Ada Harland (Ada S. Smith) became one of the finest burlesque artists of her day. She made her 1862 London debut in "Friends or Foes," then came to the U.S. with Lydia Thompson's company and became a star. In 1873 Harland married Brander Matthews, a theater scholar, and retired.
