Julie de Ruyther

Julie de Ruyther or de Ryther was a concert vocalist and performer who enjoyed a long career, from the 1860s to the 1890s. The singer performed at New York venues such as Steinway Hall, Chickering Hall. and Gilmore's Garden. Later in her career de Ruyther turned to operetta, singing Buttercup in the comic opera "HMS Pinafore" (1879) and Ruth in the "Pirates of Penzance" (1882). The artist poses here in street clothes at the Howell studio in New York, circa 1875.
