Gaetano Donizetti (1797-1848)
The Italian Gaetano Donizetti, a remarkably popular composer, wrote more than sixty operas. His best known serious works were "Lucrezia Borgia" (1833) and "Lucia di Lammermoor" (1835), but he also wrote comic operas such as "La Fille du Regiment" (1840) and "L'Elisir d'amore" (1832). Donizetti also produced church music, symphonies, chamber music, and oratorios, but after he became paralyzed in 1845 he stopped composing. An unidentified engraver created this image.
