Jacques Fromental Halevy (1799-1862)

Jacques Francois Elie Fromental Halevy was born in Paris to a German Jewish father (Elias Levy, who changed his name) and a French Jewish mother. He was a celebrated nineteenth-century composer and teacher. Thirty-two of his operas were performed. Halevy is best known for his monumental opera, "La Juive" [The Jewess], which was received with wild enthusiasm in Paris and performed 562 times before being dropped from the repertoire. It gained worldwide popularity. Despite Halevy's tremendous fame in the nineteenth century, his work has nearly disappeared from the stage. An unidentified artist created this image.
