Bertha Johannsen, an operatic and concert vocalist from England, made her U.S. debut in 1856 at the Academy of Music of New York, in "Alessandro Stradella." In the 1860s Johannsen - in great demand - became one of the most famous German singers in the U.S., performing at the Academy of Music and Wallack's Theatre, as well as German theaters such as the Thalia and the Stadt-Theater. Johannsen appeared most frequently in "Faust," "Martha," and "Don Juan." The vocalist poses at the Fredricks studio in New York, circa 1860.
