Katti Lanner (1829-1908)
Katti or Kathi Lanner, born in Vienna, trained as a dancer but also excelled at choreography, directed, taught dance, and performed opera. She made her 1870 New York debut at the Grand Opera House where - in 1873 - she directed a ballet of fifty children in "A Midsummer Night's Dream." In 1874 Lanner sang the part of Helene in "Robert der Teufel" (Robert the Devil) at the Stadt-Theater, a German venue in New York, but in 1875 she reverted to the role of prima ballerina in "Ahmed," at the Grand Opera House. With a severe gaze, Lanner poses at the Gurney studio in New York, circa 1875.
