Emma Abbott (1850-1891)
Emma Abbott, an operatic soprano, impresario and manager, daughter of an itinerant Chicago musician, began singing when her family lost its money. At age thirteen Abbott started teaching the guitar and traveling on the road. In 1867 Clara Kellogg introduced her to teacher Achille Errani. Thanks to Adelina Patti, the vocalist made her operatic debut at Covent Garden in 1876 as Marie in "La Fille du Regiment." Abbott made her U.S. debut in 1877 at New York's Academy of Music and formed her own touring company in 1878.
