Carl Anschutz (1813-1870)

Carl Anschutz, an eminent orchestra conductor in the 1860s, founded the Anschutz Musik-Institut. The conductor led the U.S. premiere of Halevy's "La Juive" at New York's Winter Garden in 1860. Anschutz spent much time conducting at concerts, but he also directed the 1865 and 1869 seasons at New York's Theatre Francais, leading great operas such as "Faust" and "Martha." The theater world grieved his death in 1870.
