Ida Lewis
Ida Lewis moved to the Lime Rock lighthouse in 1857. This lighthouse keeper's daughter saved 18 lives and was dubbed "The Heroine of Newport" in 1869. Lewis was made the official keeper of Lime Rock Light in Newport, Rhode Island by a special Act of Congress in 1879. Ida Lewis poses here at the Manchester Brothers studio in Providence, Rhode Island, circa 1869. Today she is celebrated as one of the great heroines of Rhode Island: the Ida Lewis Lighthouse, Ida Lewis Rock, Ida Lewis Yacht Club, and other organizations celebrate her memory.
