John Gibbs Gilbert (1810-1889)
John Gilbert, born in Boston, made his acting debut in 1828. He first appeared in New York in 1839. Gilbert's true forte was comedy, especially in the role of old men. In 1847 he performed at London's Princess' Theatre. Gilbert became manager at Wallack's Theatre in New York and was Wallack's leading actor from 1861 to 1888.
