Giovanni Matteo Mario (1810-1883)
Giovanni Matteo Mario was a world-famous Italian operatic tenor. Meyerbeer personally coached Mario for his debut as Robert le Diable in 1838 at the Paris Opera. Mario and soprano Giulia Grisi, his stage partner and life companion, divided their time between Paris and London. Mario's greatest successes were as Faust, Nemorino, and Almaviva. The tenor's title was "Cavaliere di Candia." Mario retired in 1871, near the time he posed for this photo at the Warren studio in Boston.
