Annie or Annis Montague was a classically-trained vocalist whose career encompassed opera, comic opera, and variety shows. Montague made her New York debut in 1875 as the Queen in "The Huguenots" at Booth's Theatre. By 1879 the singer was Josephine in "H. M. S. Pinafore," and in the 1880s she performed in variety theaters. Early in her career, Montague poses with a serious expression at the Brady studio in New York.
