"The Pearl of Egypt." Philae Island
Beginning in the seventh century BC, Nubian temples and shrines graced the Egyptian island of Philae (Jazirat Filah), because it remained above the Nile floodings. In ancient times the island was sacred to the goddess Isis. This photo captures the island before its flooding behind the Aswan dam in the 1890s.
