Eliza Snow (1804-1887)
Eliza Roxey Snow was a poet and Mormon women's leader. She married Joseph Smith in 1841 and after his death in 1844 she married his successor, Brigham Young. Both men had several wives in accordance with the Mormon practice of polygamy or spiritual wifery. In 1880 Snow was elected president of Mormon women's organizations throughout the world. She helped transform Mormon history into verse and is the author of many of their hymns. Snow poses here at the C. W. Carter studio in Salt Lake City, Utah.
