Charlotte Matilda Vining, Mrs. John Wood (c.1836-1915)
Born in England, Vining, a comic actress and theater manager, made her U.S. debut in 1854, in "A Loan of a Lover," at the New Boston Theatre. In 1860 she renamed Laura Keene's Theatre the Olympic Theatre and managed it until 1866. Lincoln saw her star in "Pocahontas" in 1863. Mrs. Wood made her 1866 London debut in "Barnaby Rudge" under her cousin, George Vining, at the Princess' Theatre. Mrs. Wood then successfully managed the St. James Theater in London.
