Alma Stuart Stanley (1854-1931)

Alma Stuart Stanley, an English actress, vocalist, and dancer, came to a tragic end. She debuted in Milan in 1872 and in England in 1873. Stanley made her New York debut at Haverley's Fourteenth Street Theatre in "La Fille du Tambour Major" in 1880. The young woman performed with the famous D'Oyly Carte Opera company in 1881, then went on to Tony Pastor's Broadway Theatre. Returning to England in 1883, Stanley remained popular in drama, comedy, and variety. Stanley's final bow in London was in "The House Agent's Dilemma" at Queen's Gate Hall in 1902. Tragically, the actress died in Holloway Jail in 1931. Arrested for drunkenness at age 77, she was beyond recognition when incarcerated. Following her death Stanley's body was identified and a sympathetic jury returned a verdict of death by natural causes at the inquest. Here the young Stanley poses in costume at the elite Sarony studio in New York.
