Suzanne Thal was a French opera-bouffe performer from the Athenee theater, in Paris, who enjoyed a long career on the New York stage. Thal made her U.S. debut at the Grand Opera House in 1870, as Wanda in "La Grande Duchesse" and Fragoletto in "Les Brigands." In the late 1870s the actress became the "leading old woman" in New York's Theatre Francais company. Thal poses here in costume, wearing a peasant blouse and a polka-dot veil over her head at the W. R. Howell studio in New York.
