Empress Teresa Cristina (1822-1889)

Her family arranged for Princess Teresa Cristina of the Two-Sicilies to marry Pedro II of Brazil. When the princess arrived in Brazil, the emperor exclaimed, "She is terrible." The empress bore three children - two sons died and the daughter became the official heiress of the empire. The imperial family was exiled to Portugal in 1889, when Brazil became a republic, and Donna Teresa died shortly thereafter. Soberly dressed, the empress poses for an unidentified photographer.
