Elizabeth Richards Tilton (1834-1897)

In 1870, Mrs. Elizabeth Richards Tilton confessed to her husband - editor, author, abolitionist and women's rights advocate Theodore Tilton - that she and their pastor, the famous Henry Ward Beecher, had had an affair. The nationally-covered trial resulted in a hung jury, nine for Beecher and three for Tilton. Beecher returned to his pulpit.
