Lewis Thornton Powell

He was executed on July 7, 1865, for his part in the conspiracy to kill Lincoln. He was the son of a Baptist Florida minister, and his two brothers had been killed in the Confederate army. He used the alias "Lewis Paine." This photograph was taken on the deck of the Saugus, one of the ships that carried the prisoners before they were jailed.
