Lewis Thornton Powell
He was hanged on July 7, 1865, for his part in the conspiracy to kill Lincoln. He was the son of a Baptist Florida minister, and his two brothers had been killed in the Confederate army. He used the alias "Lewis Paine." The photograph was taken on the deck of the Montauk, one of the ships that carried the prisoners before they were jailed.
