August Bebel (1840-1913)

A German writer and socialist, Bebel led the Social Democratic Party (SPD) of Germany for more than 40 years and was a great figure in the history of western European socialism. He grew up in extreme poverty as the son of a Prussian army officer and came to oppose the Reichstag, German colonialism in Africa, and anti-Semitism.
