Charles O'Conor (1804-1884)
Charles O'Conor, a lawyer and politician, was nominated for the presidency by the "Straight-out" Democrats because he believed slavery was just and beneficent. He held that it was unconstitutional to coerce the states that had seceded. O'Conor was Jefferson Davis's senior counsel when Davis was indicted for treason.
