B. P. Shillaber (1814-90) and C. G. Halpine (1829-68)
Humorist Benjamin Penhallow Shillaber (seated) of the "Boston Post" created Mrs. Partington, a scatterbrained character, for his comic sketches, and wrote three books, "Life and Sayings of Mrs. Partington" (1854), "Partingtonian Patchwork" (1873), and "Ike and his Friends" (1879). Charles Graham Halpine, an Irish journalist and poet, created the character of Miles O'Reilly, an Irish private in the Union Army. His famous satires appeared in the "New York Herald" and then as "Life and Adventures, Songs, Services and Speeches of Private Miles OReilly" (1864).
