Matthew F. Maury (1806-1873)

Matthew Fontane Maury was a famous hydrographer and commander in the Confederate Navy. Maury sat for the plaster version of his portrait by Richmond sculptor Edward Valentine (1838–1930) for four days. After its completion in 1869, the artist declared it the best likeness he had ever modeled.
