Clara Vesey
Clara Vesey was an actress and singer. A half-sister of Emily Soldene, Vesey belonged to Soldene's troupe for many years. In 1874 Vesey appeared as Alfred in the first U.S. production of "Chilperic" at New York's Lyceum Theatre. Marrying a German corn-merchant named Hoffmeister, Vesey retired from the stage at about age thirty. Her daughter, Kate Vesey (b.1883), was also an actress and singer. In this photograph Vesey poses in a remarkable costume on an elaborate backdrop and plays with a bird.
