Jose Mora (c.1849-1926)
A Spaniard born in Cuba, photographer Jose Maria Mora found refuge in New York during the Cuban Revolution. After studying with Napoleon Sarony, he opened his first studio in 1870 at 707 Broadway. Mora owned a famous collection of painted backdrops, many designed by himself, which he used in his photos. The artist gradually became mentally ill, and died on a psychiatric ward in New York, without next of kin. This self-portrait shows a young and handsome Mora in his own New York studio.
