Joseph Barnby (1838-1896)

Sir Joseph Barnby was an English composer and conductor. In 1854 he entered the Royal Academy of Music, competed for the Mendelssohn Scholarship in 1856 and tied for first place with Arthur Sullivan. After a second test, Sullivan won. Barnby went on to become an important director, conducting the first performance in England of Wagner's "Parsifal" in 1884. Subsequently he conducted rehearsals and concerts of the Royal Academy of Music. In 1892 Barnby was knighted. A prolific composer, his works include an oratorio, many services and anthems, and 246 hymns.
