Joseph William Bazalgette (1819-1891)

Sir Joseph William Bazalgette was a British civil engineer. Following the terrible cholera epidemic of 1853-54 and the "Great Stink of London" in 1858, Bazalgette designed crucial drainage and sewer systems for London (1865-75), thereby saving many lives and convincing the public that cholera was waterborne. Dapper, he poses here with a polka-dot tie and dundrearies at the Elliott & Fry studio in London.
