Julius Benedict (1804-1885)
Sir Julius Benedict, a British composer and conductor, was born in Germany. In 1821 Weber accepted him as a pupil. In 1825 Benedict became conductor at the Karntnertortheater, then at the S Carlo and Fondo theaters, where he also flourished as a pianist, teacher, and composer. While in Naples, Benedict wrote three operas. London became his permanent home in 1835. As musical director at Drury Lane he brought out romantic operas by Balfe, as well as three English operas of his own. In 1850 P. T. Barnum paid Benedict $25,000 to accompany Jenny Lind on a tour of the U.S. as her director. A naturalized British subject, Benedict was knighted in 1871.
