Dion Boucicault (1820-1890)
Dion Boucicault was an Irish-born actor and playwright who emigrated to America. He wrote or adapted more than 132 plays including "The Octoroon" and "The Shaughraun." A theater owner and stage manager, he was responsible for safety and fireproofing innovations in theaters and scenery. Boucicault also created the "long-run" self-sufficient touring company that did not rely on hiring local actors in each city. Here he poses, examining photos, at the W. & D. Downey studio in London.
